On the night of January 6 to 7, believers celebrate the Nativity of Christ.

On the night of January 6 to 7 one of the main church holidays is celebrated — the Nativity of Christ. It is dedicated to the birth of Jesus Christ and is regarded as a time of special joy, quiet, and spiritual renewal.

The celebration of Christmas begins with a night service, which takes place in churches late on the evening of January 6 and continues into the deep night. Such a service is called the All-Night Vigil and is performed in remembrance of the Gospel account that Christ was born at night. After the service the faithful may receive Communion. In Kirov, the Divine Liturgy served with an episcopal rite began at the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos on January 6 at 11:50 p.m. Today, January 7, at 4:00 p.m. the Great Vespers will begin in the Assumption Cathedral. The festive services are led by Mark, Bishop of Vyatka and Slobodskoy.

The feast itself lasts not one day but a whole week — from January 7 to 13. During this time it is customary to attend church, spend time with loved ones, show generosity, and help those in need. Homes are decorated with fir trees as a symbol of eternal life, candles are lit on Christmas Eve, and after the end of the fast people gather for a festive dinner.

Clergy emphasize that the main thing about Christmas is not the feasting but a person’s inner state. During the holidays it is not recommended to practice fortune-telling or turn to magical practices, nor to be stingy or indifferent toward others.

Even those who did not keep the fast may come to church for Christmas. According to priests, participation in the service is the first step toward a meaningful spiritual path, and the Christmas night itself becomes a special and memorable experience for many.
