On Saturday, November 1, Orthodox Christians observe Dimitrius' Parental Saturday — a special day of commemoration of the deceased. The requiem at the Holy Assumption Cathedral in Kirov, which took place in the morning, was led by Metropolitan Mark of Vyatka and Slobodskoy. Worshippers were able to submit notes with the names of relatives to be commemorated. Requiem services on this day are also held in other churches in Kirov and the region.

Dimitrius' Parental Saturday was established in the 14th century by Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy. After the victory at the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380 he visited the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, where he commemorated the fallen warriors. Over time this day became a general day of remembrance for all Orthodox Christians who have passed away.

Since then, on the Saturday before the day of Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki (November 8 in the New Calendar), requiems and memorial liturgies are performed in all Orthodox churches. On this day worshippers visit cemeteries, tend the graves of relatives, light candles, and pray for the repose of the souls of the departed. Requiems and litanies are served in churches, and memorial tables are set out at home, the press service of the Vyatka Diocese reports.
