The State Duma supported limiting registration of new users on Telegram and WhatsApp*

As Alexander Yushchenko said, no official decisions on this issue have been made yet, but he called such measures logical and timely, Vechernyaya Moskva writes.

According to the lawmaker, such steps are aimed at developing Russian digital platforms and gradually reducing dependence on foreign services. Yushchenko noted that most Russians already use popular messengers, and new users are being encouraged to switch to domestic equivalents, in particular to the MAKH platform.

"This is a forced measure, but it is justified by the current circumstances," the deputy stressed, adding that such restrictions will not cause significant inconvenience to citizens.

Deputy chairman of the IT committee Oleg Matveychev said he supports restrictions primarily with regard to WhatsApp*, because, he said, the company does not interact with Russian regulators and does not comply with legal requirements. He compared the service to an "illegal migrant" and suggested that its operation in Russia could be completely halted in the future.

It should be recalled that on October 22 Roskomnadzor reported a partial restriction of WhatsApp* and Telegram in a number of regions of the country. The agency clarified that the measures are aimed at combating the activities of malicious actors, but the messengers' owners did not comply with the requirements issued to them.
