A trial visa-free regime for Russians came into force on Monday, September 15. For travel, it is now sufficient to have a valid international passport.
Entry without a visa is permitted for business, tourist and excursion purposes, for visiting relatives and friends, as well as under exchange programs. The maximum length of stay in the country is 30 days.
Russian President Vladimir Putin called China’s decision unexpected and expressed confidence that it would lead to an increase in travel, create more favorable conditions for business and strengthen ties between the two countries.
Russia is ready to introduce a similar regime for Chinese citizens. According to the Russian Union of the Travel Industry’s forecast, this could increase the flow of Chinese tourists to Russia by 25%. The Ministry of Transport also suggested that the number of flights between the countries could potentially rise by 30–40%.
