Russians have been warned about the hidden threat that bouquets may conceal.

As March 8 approaches, flower shops are full of a variety of imported roses, chrysanthemums and exotic plants. However, as the Rosselkhoznadzor Administration for the Trans-Baikal Territory warns, dangerous quarantine organisms such as Western flower thrips can enter the house along with a beautiful bouquet.

"This pest is extremely tenacious and prefers to parasitize popular flowers such as chrysanthemums, roses, gerberas, carnations and violets," says Irina Slastikhina, acting head of the Plant Quarantine Supervision Department. — But he also does not shy away from vegetable crops, feeding on the juices of almost three hundred plant species. It is especially dangerous that thrips is a carrier of viruses that cause dangerous plant diseases."

Experts advise to carefully inspect the flowers before buying. Thrips can be detected by shaking off the flowers and buds on white paper and examining them under magnification. The body length of an adult is only 1-2 mm, the color is light yellow or brown, the body is narrow, with two pairs of wings.

When purchasing flowers in a retail chain, you should pay attention to the availability of documents from sellers confirming the phytosanitary condition of the products. To prevent the spread of the pest, it is recommended to keep the donated bouquets at a distance from other indoor plants, observing a kind of quarantine.

Rosselkhoznadzor reminds that vigilance and adherence to simple rules will help preserve the health of your plants and avoid unpleasant surprises.
