Russians have started to pay with cash more often.
Recently, Russians are increasingly paying in cash. In April-May 2026, the share of such payments rose to 30.2%. A year earlier, it was 25%, reports "Izvestia."
The volume of cash in the economy is also increasing. According to the Bank of Russia, it grew by 14% over the year and reached 20 trillion rubles in April. Since the beginning of 2026, the volume of cash in circulation has increased by 1.2 trillion rubles. This exceeds the growth from the previous year.
Experts believe that this trend is related to the rising costs of small businesses, mobile internet outages, and the desire of some citizens to keep their savings in cash form. Changes in taxation, including the increase in VAT and the rising costs for entrepreneurs to accept cashless payments, have also had an impact.
Cash is most often used to pay for automotive goods, repairs, and hotel services. Experts believe that there is a significant share of self-employed individuals and private craftsmen in these areas, and the commissions for acquiring can significantly reduce business profits.
The highest number of cash payments has been recorded in the southern part of the country. Dagestan is the leader, where 36% of purchases are paid in cash. In Moscow, the figure is 10%.
