According to the regional health ministry, patients no longer need to travel to large cities to undergo carotid artery surgeries. Recently, these procedures have been available under the compulsory health insurance policy at the vascular surgery department of the Kirov Regional Clinical Hospital.
According to specialists, the surgeries help eliminate atherosclerosis of the carotid arteries. In the early stages, it does not pose a threat to a person; however, if the lumen of the arteries narrows by more than 50%, there is a risk of ischemic stroke, and if it narrows by more than 70%, surgery is required. It can be determined whether surgery is necessary through an ultrasound, which is prescribed when there are indications during the second stage of examination.
The most common procedure is eversion carotid endarterectomy. It allows for the removal of the plaque and restoration of blood flow, which prevents ischemic stroke.
The health ministry added that critical narrowing of the carotid arteries (more than 70%) is found in every second patient aged 50 to 59 and in every third patient aged 40 to 49. Among patients over 60, this diagnosis is made in 65%.
