Not for everyone: 81% of Russians called public marriage proposals a nightmare.
The perfect marriage proposal for Russians is increasingly associated not with a restaurant or a home, but with travel. This conclusion was reached by specialists from SOKOLOV, who surveyed citizens as part of a joint study. It turned out that 32% of respondents consider romance on a trip to be the most preferred format, while 42% believe that the moment itself is more important than where it takes place.
At the same time, Russians are quite unanimous about what they definitely do not want. Public proposals — on stage, at the airport, or in a shopping mall — appeal to only 19% of those surveyed. The remaining 81% are divided as follows: 47% view such scenes from the sidelines without any desire to ever repeat them, while 34% describe them as their nightmare.
As for the settings, the seaside or ocean shore leads with 42%. In second place are the mountains (25%), and in third, a romantic city (24%). A secluded hotel or house in nature attracted 17%. Interestingly, only 15% of respondents are satisfied with their hometown as a proposal location, while 40% stated that the location does not matter.
The geography of dreams is also telling. 31% envision a proposal in Europe, 30% in Southeast Asia (Bali, Thailand, Maldives). Russia as a destination confidently competes with abroad: the nature of Baikal, Altai, or Karelia was chosen by 25%. Next are Turkey (17%) and the UAE (6%).
The main factors that could spoil the moment are an inappropriate situation like a quarrel or stress (57%), the presence of strangers (35%), and an unsuitable location (28%).
The ring remains an important detail. An ideal ring for 34% of respondents is a classic with one large stone, 17% prefer minimalism. 15% admitted that they do not care what the ring looks like, while another 10% said that the main thing is for it to please their partner. A third of respondents (33%) choose the jewelry themselves, a quarter (25%) consult with friends and family, and 17% purchase it together with their partner.
The study also showed that almost half of the respondents (46%) have not yet made or received a proposal. Among those who have already been proposed to, only 20% described it as ideal. Another 17% rated the experience as successful but with awkward moments, while 16% responded negatively about it.
In reality, proposals most often happen at home — this was the response of 36%. In nature — 19%, in a restaurant — 10%. Abroad, it happened for 8%, and during a trip within Russia — for 7%.

Only 19% of respondents are not opposed to a scene in an airport or shopping mall. The others either try not to look towards the pompous kneeling or directly call it a terrible nightmare.
