Russians are stocking up on cards: there are already 3.6 bank cards per resident.

According to the annual report of the Bank of Russia, at the beginning of 2026, there were 544.8 million payment cards in the country — an average of 3.6 cards per resident. This includes not only classic plastic cards but also virtual ones, as well as payment stickers, which are becoming increasingly popular.

Despite this, the pace of issuance is slowing down. While in 2024 the number of cards grew by 14.8%, in 2025 it increased by only 5.6%.

Cards remain the primary payment instrument: in 2025, 72.7 billion transactions were made using them, totaling 154.3 trillion rubles. However, their share is gradually decreasing — Russians are increasingly using alternative payment methods. According to the Central Bank, the number and volume of cashless transactions using cards decreased by 4.4% and 9.6%, respectively, over the year.
