In Russia, there may be restrictions on taxi fare increases.
Currently, during rain, snowfall, or rush hour, aggregators automatically apply a surge multiplier, which is multiplied by the base fare of the trip. It depends on demand and the number of available cars and can sometimes reach triple the amount or more.
This is most commonly faced by residents of large cities, where in bad weather the price of a trip can increase several times, as reported by "RIA Novosti," citing a response from the Ministry of Transport to the head of the State Duma's Labor Committee, Yaroslav Nilov.
Deputy Nilov proposed to establish a maximum allowable threshold for such price increases. The Ministry of Transport sent a request to the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS), and they found grounds for regulation. The agency noted that surge multipliers are intended to smooth demand, but in practice, they can significantly increase the cost of specific trips.
The FAS considers it advisable to work on the issue of regulating the size of the multiplier. The Ministry of Transport, in turn, is ready to participate in discussions on legislative changes at the platform of the State Duma's Transport Committee.
