In Kirov Oblast, neonatal screening helped save the life of a newborn girl.
According to the regional Ministry of Health, in 2025 free screening for hereditary diseases was performed on 7,574 newborns. Today, under the state program, infants are screened for 36 congenital disorders — six times more than before. Blood is drawn at the maternity hospital on days 2–4 of the infant’s life.
One such patient was a girl who, based on the screening results, was suspected of having adrenogenital syndrome — a congenital dysfunction of the adrenal cortex. The child was immediately referred to the Kirov Regional Children's Clinical Hospital.
According to Natalia Kochkina, head of the pediatric department for younger children, the diagnosis was confirmed after examinations by an endocrinologist and a gynecologist, as well as through laboratory tests and an ultrasound. Without timely treatment, the disease could have led to severe complications and even death. Hormone therapy was promptly prescribed for the infant, and she is now under constant specialist supervision.
The regional Ministry of Health notes that in 2025 screening identified three hereditary diseases: adrenogenital syndrome, cystic fibrosis, and biotinidase deficiency. Early diagnosis makes it possible to prevent the development of severe symptoms and significantly improve the quality of life for children and their families.
