Genetic tests for prospective parents will be free from 2026.
From 2026, Russia has included genetic tests for prospective parents in the state-guaranteed program of free medical care, the Kommersant newspaper reports. These are tests for monogenic diseases and chromosomal rearrangements carried out as part of IVF programs.
Such tests are prescribed in cases where there is a risk of a child being born with hereditary diseases. They make it possible to detect possible genetic abnormalities at the earliest stages — even before the embryo is transferred into the uterus. Previously, the cost of such tests ranged from 20,000 to 40,000 rubles.
From 2026, genetic testing will be available free of charge — the costs will be covered by the medical insurance system. The tests will also be available, including as part of expanded neonatal screening* when planning a pregnancy.
It should be noted that Russia already provides free screening of newborns for 36 hereditary diseases, including cystic fibrosis and spinal muscular atrophy. The new system will allow risks to be identified at the planning stage and reduce the likelihood of children being born with severe genetic disorders.
