One in five Russians is convinced that the Sun revolves around the Earth.
According to a survey, about 20% of Russians are convinced that the Sun revolves around the Earth, and 16% believe that humans lived at the same time as dinosaurs. According to scientists, such answers raise serious questions about the education system and young people’s interest in scientific knowledge.
At the same time, 68% of respondents said they are “to some extent” interested in science, but only 26% actually follow scientific news. Science appeals most to citizens over 55, while young people aged 18–24 give the least informed answers — and show the highest propensity to believe in the supernatural. Thus, 39% of those surveyed believe in the existence of witches and sorcerers, and 34% are convinced of psychics’ ability to predict the future.
Russians named medicine (80%), climate (74%) and the origin of the universe (73%) as the most appealing fields of science. However, only 7–9% of participants were able to name even a single Russian scientist of world-class standing.
Deputy President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Ivanov links the situation to changes in the education system in the early 2000s: pupils began to be offered a “narrow” educational trajectory and prepared as “qualified consumers” rather than as broadly educated people. This has led to gaps in basic knowledge about the world.
Nevertheless, according to the study, trust in the scientific community remains high: 72% of Russians trust the Russian Academy of Sciences — one of the highest ratings among public institutions, reports Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

A survey by the Institute of Psychology of the Russian Academy of Sciences revealed an alarming trend: a significant portion of Russians confuse basic scientific facts — one in five is convinced that the Sun revolves around the Earth, and many young people believe in witches, sorcerers, and psychics.
