Mikhail Mezhirov, an honorary citizen of the city of Kirov, has passed away.

      At the age of 99, honorary citizen of the city of Kirov and Great Patriotic War veteran Mikhail Yuryevich Mezhirov has died, the Kirov city administration reported.

      Mikhail Yuryevich was born on August 23, 1927, in the Chernihiv Oblast of Ukraine. At the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War he entered a military school and graduated with the rank of lieutenant. Afterwards he was sent as part of NKVD troops to the Far East. For his combat merits he was awarded the Order of the Red Star, the Medal "For the Victory over Japan," and other decorations.

      After the war Mikhail Yuryevich served in various positions in the troops of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs and was one of the founders of the Kirov unit of the National Guard of the Russian Federation. He retired in 1985 as head of the operational department of the 79th Division of the Internal Troops of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs.

      "To those who knew him, Mikhail Yuryevich was remembered as a kind, optimistic, and open person. He sincerely loved the city of Kirov, which had become like a home to him, and its residents, among whom, in the veteran’s words, there were only good people," the city administration said.

      The editorial board of Newsler.ru expresses its condolences to the family and loved ones of Mikhail Mezhirov.
