The risk of scammers collecting biometric data to create deepfakes has increased.
How is data collected?
Scammers call people via video calls under various pretexts. During the conversation they record the person’s appearance and voice. Often, posing as identity confirmation for payment of a service or submission of an application, they ask the person to turn on the camera and show their face from different angles, and to wave their hand in front of the lens. This allows them to gather enough material to create a digital double.
Since modern security systems in banking applications can detect such forgeries, the collected deepfakes are actively used to deceive the victim’s relatives, friends, or colleagues rather than banks, reports mkset.ru.
How to protect yourself?
Cybersecurity experts recommend following a few simple rules to prevent attackers from obtaining your biometric data:
Do not follow suspicious links and do not grant camera or microphone access to unfamiliar websites and apps.
Do not confirm your identity via video calls or in apps if the request was not initiated by you.
Use biometric authentication only in official apps of trusted organizations, such as banks or government services.
Remember that government agencies and large companies generally do not call clients via video calls and do not require identity confirmation in this way.
