The geomagnetic storm has been ongoing for about 30 hours.
The magnetic storm that started on September 30 at around three in the morning has still not subsided. According to the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy (XRAS), the continuous duration of the event has already reached about 30 hours.
Scientists note that conditions in near-Earth space remain unfavourable. Solar wind speed has increased from roughly 400 to 700 km/s, and the plasma temperature has tripled — from 100,000 to 300,000 degrees. Despite a slight decrease in the intensity of the interplanetary magnetic field, the storm remains at G1–G2 levels.
On the evening of September 30 an expansion of the auroral zone was recorded. In addition to the country’s northeastern regions, a significant number of reports also came from central Russia, where the auroras were barely visible to the naked eye but were clearly captured on cameras.
According to XRAS’s forecast, the probability of the magnetosphere stabilizing within the next 24 hours remains low. Moreover, experts, for the first time in recent days, indicate a better-than-50-percent chance of major X‑class flares on the Sun, which could trigger new disturbances.
