Kirov residents were told what dual-stream waste collection is.
As the regional operator explained, dual waste collection is a system of separating waste into "dry" (recyclables) and "wet" (organic, non-sortable residues). Each fraction is collected by a separate specialized vehicle. This guarantees that valuable recyclables are sent for processing, and the rest for further disposal. This type of waste collection is practiced in Kirov Oblast.
Advantages of this approach:
- It is easier for residents to learn and begin separating their waste.
- No significant increase in the amount of specialized equipment and waste collection machinery is required.
- Containers for separate waste collection (RSO) do not require much space on sites, allowing such containers to be placed at a larger number of locations.
This is in contrast to separate collection into four or more fractions (paper, plastic, glass, and metal), which can cause confusion and lead to mixing of different types of waste. Moreover, logistics become more complicated, since separate transport is required to remove each fraction, which inevitably affects the cost of service and the level of the waste removal tariff.
The launch of the "Central" waste processing complex in the Slobodskoy district will be an important step in the development of dual-stream collection. That is where the waste collected through the region’s separate collection system will be sorted. This will significantly increase the volumes of recyclable material and reduce the burden on landfills, which aligns with the goals of the national project "Environmental Well-being."
