The controversial landfill in Yaransk will be closed only after a new complex is built.
The dispute over the MSW landfill in Yaransk, located near Kadayevsky Pond, continues. Local residents have been expressing dissatisfaction for several months and are demanding that the facility be moved to a more suitable site.
On September 3 activists held a preparatory meeting to coordinate their position ahead of a meeting with the administration and the ministry.
Residents emphasize that the landfill is too close to the town and villages, which they believe is causing environmental problems: mutating fish, polluted rivers, and an increase in the numbers of crows, rats, and cockroaches. In addition, a high level of oncological diseases has allegedly been recorded in neighboring settlements.
Local activists say they are not against the landfill as such, but against its specific placement. They propose an alternative site in the Yaransky District, closer to Pizhma, which meets safety requirements and does not threaten water bodies.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Kirov Region reported that the meeting with residents was postponed due to the governor’s meeting. There is no new date yet. The department emphasized that the existing landfill is a municipal facility and that all residential houses are located outside the 500-meter sanitary zone. “There are no exceedances of environmental impact indicators on the border of the sanitary zone,” the ministry’s official response says.
Work is being carried out at the landfill to move waste located outside the active working areas, to form the landfill body, to construct a temporary road of reinforced concrete slabs to the storage area, and to install a sedimentation pit and an oil-collection well. After the construction of a new complex consisting of a waste-sorting station and a modern landfill, the existing facility will be closed and reclaimed.
Earlier residents appealed to the President of Russia and held protests that local authorities tried to disperse with the help of the police. In addition, activists are concerned about the landfill’s proximity to a cemetery, which also causes social discontent.
