Justice has been served: the murderer and rapist of a woman from Kirov was sentenced to 12 years in a penal colony.
One of the most high-profile unsolved cases of recent decades in Kirov Oblast has been closed. A court found a 64-year-old resident of Vologda Oblast guilty of the brutal murder of an 18-year-old woman from Kirov, committed in June 1998 in the forest near the village of Baranovshchina in Kumyonsky District. According to the investigation, the man attacked the girl, threatened her with violence, committed forcible acts against her, and then attempted to rape her. Fearing that the victim would tell the police, he strangled her with a leather cord and fled. For many years the perpetrator could not be identified, but the investigation continued. The breakthrough came after physical evidence was checked against the federal genomic information database: DNA at the crime scene matched a profile whose relative turned out to be the defendant. In 2025 he was found in Vologda Oblast and brought to Kirov, where he fully confessed. The court sentenced the killer to 12 years in a maximum-security penal colony.
