Scientists at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences recorded an "unpredicted" geomagnetic storm.
According to scientists, there were no signs of an impending magnetic disturbance the day before: forecasts showed a calm situation, and solar wind parameters did not indicate approaching plasma clouds. Nevertheless, a storm suddenly began on Earth.
"A completely inexplicable and hard-to-explain magnetic storm was unexpectedly recorded on Earth on Wednesday night. The event was absent from the forecasts, which as recently as the day before were entirely green. The mystery, however, is not even this (after all, scientists are human and can make mistakes or press the wrong button when doing calculations), but that even in hindsight it is completely impossible to understand what happened on or near Earth that could have caused such a violent reaction of the magnetic field," the scientists wrote on their Telegram channel.
Researchers suggest that the cause may have been a rare phenomenon — a so-called substorm, when the magnetosphere's energy is released due to internal processes, without the influence of external factors. Additional support for this version came from spontaneously recorded auroras the day before.
Scientists are now continuing to analyze the data to explain the nature of the event.
