In Kirov, a pensioner handed over 2.1 million rubles wrapped in a bag to scammers.
According to the press service of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Kirov Region, an unknown person who identified himself as an employee of a communications company called the woman's home phone. Under the pretext of renewing the contract he asked for her mobile phone number. Shortly thereafter the pensioner was contacted by an "employee of the military prosecutor's office" and a "representative of the committee for bank supervision." They convinced the woman that her funds were in danger of being seized and offered to "protect" them.
To that end, the Kirov resident was instructed to wrap the cash in an opaque bag and hand it over to a courier at the address provided. The trusting pensioner followed all the instructions and gave the man 2,100,000 rubles. When, several days later, the promised money had not been returned to her, the woman realized she had fallen victim to fraudsters.
A criminal case has been opened in connection with the incident, and the investigation is ongoing.
