A summer kitchen has been restored at the Saltykov-Shchedrin house-museum estate in Kirov.

The house, built in 1848, is an example of a 19th-century estate complex. In the run-up to Kirov’s 650th anniversary, extensive restoration work was carried out at the museum, after which the process began of integrating the building and the adjacent grounds into a single museum complex.

In the summer kitchen the stove was relaid, period-appropriate utensils were installed, and 19th-century culinary traditions were recreated. Based on historical accounts, artists prepared prop dishes — including fish dishes, which the writer particularly loved.

On September 5 the museum opened the exhibition “The Estate on Voznesenskaya” (0+). Visitors are presented with rare documents — the land plot plan, the first photograph of the house (1860s–1870s), as well as photographs from the period when the building housed communal apartments.

The exhibition is part of the preparations for the 200th anniversary of Saltykov-Shchedrin’s birth, which will be commemorated nationwide in 2026.
