Kurdyumov saved a 13-year-old girl from severe scoliosis.
In Kirov, doctors performed a complex high-tech operation on a 13-year-old girl from Zaporizhzhia Oblast who was suffering from a severe form of scoliosis. From an early age she had developed a scoliotic spinal deformity that progressed as she grew.
The patient’s spine was curved in an S-shape. The deformity displaced the heart and compressed the left lung, threatening the function of vital organs. Medics noted that without surgery the girl faced serious respiratory and cardiovascular complications.
The four-hour operation was performed by orthopedic trauma surgeon Dmitry Kurdyumov, who also serves as the first deputy chairman of the government of Kirov Oblast. During the procedure special implants and titanium rods were placed in the vertebrae, which allowed the spine to be straightened and its function preserved.
After rehabilitation the girl will be able to return to a normal life without pain or limitations.
