The chief addiction specialist of the Kirov Region spoke about the link between alcohol and the risk of developing cancer.

The chief freelance addiction psychiatrist for the regional Ministry of Health and chief physician of the regional narcological dispensary, Elena Tominina, spoke about the impact of alcohol on the development of cancer.

Tominina explained that all types of alcoholic beverages contain ethanol, which is converted in the body into acetaldehyde. Both substances are carcinogens, and when they accumulate in the body the risk of DNA damage and tumor formation increases.

Regular alcohol consumption also leads to hormonal changes, increasing the likelihood of breast cancer in women. In addition, ethanol causes chronic inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, which increases the risk of tumors in the digestive system.

According to Elena Tominina, combining alcohol and smoking significantly amplifies the threat. In people who smoke, the likelihood of developing cancers of the oral cavity, larynx and esophagus increases severalfold.

The specialist emphasized that the safest option for cancer prevention is complete abstinence from alcoholic beverages.
