Koreans are learning Russian en masse.
Interest in studying the Russian language has surged in North Korea. According to Kazbek Taysaev, chairman of the Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots and head of the interparliamentary Friendship Group with the Supreme People’s Assembly of the DPRK, knowing Russian today is considered fashionable and prestigious there, especially among young people. "This is extremely valuable. Because when young people want to speak Russian, it means the right information about us is getting through to them," he said. Taysaev added that Koreans have very sincere and warm feelings toward Russia and Russians. He made these remarks after a visit by a Russian delegation to Pyongyang, where celebrations were held to mark the 80th anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule. The delegation was led by State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin. The State Duma noted that the Russian delegation was received very warmly and emotionally.
