Russia is preparing a ban on pit bikes: riding them on roads could carry fines of up to 30,000 rubles.

Russia is set to bar pit bikes from public roads. the Interior Ministry and the Ministry of Transport have already prepared amendments to the traffic rules that will explicitly prohibit the operation of mini-motorcycles, enduros and motocross bikes on streets. These models are not registered with the traffic police (GIBDD), lack headlights, turn signals and mirrors, and are intended only for stunts and off-road use.

The reason for the changes is the rise in accidents involving pit bikes, including those with children. In just the first half of 2025 there were 288 road accidents in which minors were riding such bikes; 10 children were killed and 235 were injured. The new draft of the Code of Administrative Offenses provides for fines of up to 30,000 rubles and even community service for repeat offenses, writes the newspaper Kommersant.

While the federal law has not been adopted, regions are coping on their own: some riders are being treated as unlicensed moped drivers, others are being fined as parents who failed to supervise their children. In Krasnoyarsk Krai a criminal case was even opened against a father whose son, riding without a helmet, crashed on a pit bike he had bought.

Experts insist that pit bikes belong only on sports tracks. Their performance and power have long been comparable to full-size motorcycles, while their level of protection is zero.
