The Wild Animal Rescue Center "Big Nest" reminded residents of Kirov how to act if they find a swallow on the street. These birds do not land on the ground by their own choice. If a swallow is found on the ground, it needs help, even if it appears healthy.

The first thing to do is carefully pick up the bird and place it in a box with a lid. The bottom of the box should be lined with paper napkins. Do not use cages or carriers, as swallows easily break their feathers in them, which deprives them of a chance to return to the sky.

It is important to determine the age of the bird. An adult swallow has long wings and uniform dark plumage, while a fledgling has light-colored legs and white fluff around its beak. In any case, do not toss the bird into the air to "help" it fly away — this does not work and can lead to injuries.

Swallows feed exclusively on insects. They should not be fed eggs, meat, cottage cheese, or cat food — this is dangerous and can cause death. Only live or frozen insects, such as crickets, cockroaches, or mealworms, are suitable. Fledglings need to be fed frequently, sometimes every two hours.

There are no shelters specifically for swallows, so by rescuing a bird, a person takes on responsibility. With proper attention and help from specialized online communities, it is possible to rehabilitate the swallow and release it back into the wild.
