Scammers attack WhatsApp by offering to "rent" accounts
A new wave of fraud has overwhelmed WhatsApp users. The attackers offer to "rent" accounts for about 200 rubles a day, promising to use them for work, registration on services or communication with foreign clients. This is reported by MTS, warning users about serious risks.
Scammers are actively spreading ads about the possibility of "renting" in Telegram channels and on other platforms. After the user responds, they are asked to provide access to the account by requesting a code from an SMS or even temporarily taking possession of a SIM card.
As explained by Andrey Biychuk, director of one of MTS' products, after gaining control of the account, the attackers begin to send messages to the owner's contacts, begging for money, borrowing or demanding personal data.
The most dangerous thing, according to the expert, is that if criminal acts are committed through a "rented" account, for example, extortion, it is the owner of the number who will be responsible.
MTS urges users to be extremely vigilant and in no case transfer access to their WhatsApp accounts to third parties, even for a fee.
