In Russia, another step has been taken towards the full launch of fifth-generation networks. The State Commission for Radio Frequencies under the Ministry of Digital Development has allowed the largest telecommunications operators to deploy 5G on frequencies already used for 4G, as well as allocated new frequency bands to them. This was reported by the Ministry of Digital Development.
"Beeline," "Megafon," MTS, and T2 will be able to use the frequency bands they already have, previously allocated for LTE, for the construction of 5G networks. In addition, operators will be able to continue using foreign base stations installed before September 1, 2026. This should accelerate the launch of the new technology.
Each operator of the "big four" will be allocated 90 MHz in the range of 4630–4990 MHz without conducting auctions. The use of the new mid-band is expected to enable the creation of more efficient networks and the launch of new digital services.
At the same time, starting in 2027, a gradual transition to Russian base stations will begin. The complete replacement of foreign equipment is planned by the end of 2031.
Initially, 5G is expected to appear in cities with a population of over 1 million people. In the most popular locations of million-plus cities, networks in the range of 4.63–4.99 GHz are planned to be launched by the end of 2028. After that, coverage will be expanded for another three years.
The Ministry of Digital Development notes that 5G differs from previous generation networks with higher data transfer speeds, lower latency, and greater bandwidth. At the same time, the development of the new technology is expected to stimulate the production of domestic telecommunications equipment.
