"Perfume Killers": Oncologist Warns About the Dangers of Fake Fragrances

      Quality perfumes are not only about a lasting trail and beautiful packaging, but also about strict safety control. However, the market is flooded with counterfeits and bulk fragrances without labeling. What does this mean for health? An expert from Pirogov University (RNIIMU named after N.I. Pirogov) answered the main questions.

      Can counterfeit perfumes cause chemical burns?

      — Certainly, they can, — warns Evgeny Taratukhin. — Artisan perfumes often contain unrefined toxic solvents and fragrant substances. The essence of counterfeiting is maximum cost-cutting, which means minimal safety requirements.

      The situation with bulk perfumes is a bit more complicated: it all depends on the manufacturer. If the product is not labeled in the "Honest Sign" system, it is almost impossible to find someone responsible for quality and track the product's history.

      However, according to the doctor, the case described on social media involving skin redness is unlikely to be a chemical burn. It is characterized by an immediate effect, not a delayed one. Most likely, it is an allergic reaction or photosensitization from citrus essential oils under the influence of the sun.

      What symptoms should raise concerns and what should be done?

      — Red spots, itching, burning — immediately wash off the perfume with a large amount of water and soap, — advises Taratukhin. — If the itching does not go away, over-the-counter antihistamine ointments can be used.

      The doctor points out: in branded perfumes, many allergens (for example, oak moss absolute) are rarely used anymore or are required to be indicated on the packaging. In counterfeits, however, their content can be excessive.

      In case of a persistent reaction, the expert recommends consulting a dermatologist, and for those prone to allergies — an allergist.

      Is it true that cheap perfumes can cause cancer?

      This question raises the most fears. Evgeny Taratukhin explains:

      — Some fragrant substances do indeed show oncogenic effects in studies, which is why they are withdrawn from circulation. Theoretically, the presence of such components in large quantities in artisan perfumes may contribute to the development of oncology. But cancer development is a multifactorial and complex process. It is hardly reasonable to claim that cancer will develop specifically from perfumes.

      Nevertheless, the expert emphasizes: there is a risk, and it should not be ignored, especially with regular use of questionable products.

      Buy perfumes only from trusted places, with the "Honest Sign" label.

      If redness or itching occurs after application — wash it off immediately with water.

      For allergic reactions, consult a dermatologist or allergist.

      Do not risk your health for savings — cheap counterfeits can lead to expensive treatment.

      And the main conclusion from the expert at Pirogov University: quality perfumes undergo strict control, while artisan ones are a lottery, where the stakes are your skin and health.
