On the Gorky Railway, the results of the service for transporting pets on long-distance trains without the owners' participation have been summarized. From January to July 2026, more than 1,200 passengers used the service provided by JSC "FPK," sending their pets on the journey under the supervision of conductors.
Cats and dogs are the most commonly placed in luggage compartments — these are the traditional leaders of transportation. However, the statistics for this period also recorded more unusual "travelers." Among those transported were a lemur, a ferret, a hedgehog, as well as turtles and lizards.
The greatest interest in the service comes from residents of Nizhny Novgorod, Kirov, Kazan, and Izhevsk. It is from these cities that the majority of requests for sending pets originate.
The transportation conditions remain unchanged. Only healthy indoor pets from categories permitted for travel on long-distance trains are allowed for transportation. The preparation of transportation documents is carried out at specialized luggage offices. During the journey, animals are kept in closed cages or containers in the luggage compartment, where they have access to food, water, and a litter box. Conductors of passenger cars monitor their condition.
Owners must attach accompanying documents to the cage when sending, including a veterinary passport, a metric, or a pedigree. A water dispenser, a feeder with food, a toy for the pet, and an absorbent to maintain cleanliness inside the cage will also be required.
