Different methods - one scan: a universal QR code is coming to stores

One of the main problems when paying with a smartphone in supermarkets is the abundance of different QR codes at one checkout: one for the Fast Payment System, another for a specific bank, and a third for an installment service. The customer has to figure out which code they need, and the seller has to spend time providing hints. Starting September 1, this confusion is proposed to be eliminated at the legislative level.

A law comes into force in Russia requiring all banks to launch what is called a universal QR code. Essentially, this is not a new payment system, but a consolidated interface through which the customer can activate different tools: transfers via the Fast Payment System, payments through their bank's mobile app, installment services, and in the future, digital rubles. Technically, this solves the problem of choice: one code provides access to all options, and the customer does not need to look for a separate image for each service.

The obligation to place such codes at checkouts is not introduced for everyone at once, but taking into account the financial viability of the business. The first stage starts on September 1 and applies to large retail chains whose annual revenue exceeds 120 million rubles. In a year, starting September 2027, smaller businesses with a turnover of 30 million will join. And only from September 1, 2028, the norm will become universal: all other companies and large individual entrepreneurs will join, reports the publication "RIA Novosti."

As experts explain, the new order is beneficial for both parties. Customers are relieved from the need to scrutinize small print at the checkout, while sellers are freed from maintaining a whole set of different codes simultaneously. At the same time, all familiar methods of debiting money remain, with only the entry point to them changing. The law comes into force on September 1, and all banks should already be technically ready for this day so that customers can use the service immediately after its official launch.

With the onset of autumn, the usual scenario of cashless payments in Russian retail chains will begin to change. Instead of searching for the right image among numerous codes at the checkout, customers will be able to scan a single template and choose the appropriate deduction option. The innovation will be implemented in stages, depending on the store's revenue size.
