Is it true that coffee helps to sober up?
According to Oleg Morunov, a candidate of medical sciences and assistant at the Department of Polyclinic Therapy at the Pirogov University Institute of Clinical Medicine, caffeine does not neutralize the effects of alcohol.
— From a medical point of view, the claim that caffeine prevents alcoholism or can mitigate the effects of alcohol is erroneous, — explains the specialist.
Why did this myth arise?
It's simple. Alcohol usually relaxes, slows down reaction time, and causes drowsiness. Caffeine, on the other hand, stimulates the nervous system and temporarily makes a person feel more alert. This creates a false sense that a person has "sobered up."
But this is an illusion. Alcohol continues to affect the brain, blood vessels, heart, and nervous system. This means a person may feel more awake, but their reaction time, coordination, and decision-making abilities remain impaired.
Is coffee + alcohol a dangerous combination?
Yes, especially with regular consumption. Both substances are psychoactive. Their combination can increase the strain on the body. Among the possible consequences:
- Increased heart rate;
- Blood pressure spikes;
- Anxiety;
- Heart rhythm disturbances;
- Increased load on the nervous system.
The combination can be especially dangerous for people with cardiovascular diseases.
— Uncontrolled consumption of caffeine and alcohol can lead to negative consequences for the cardiovascular, nervous, and other systems of the body, — warns the doctor.
What about alcohol with energy drinks?
This is an even riskier option. Energy drinks contain high doses of caffeine and other stimulants. Against the backdrop of alcohol, this can create a dangerous effect: a person feels less aware of their level of intoxication and is capable of drinking more than usual.
That is why cocktails with energy drinks are considered particularly unsafe by doctors. The main conclusion is simple: coffee may temporarily make you feel more alert, but not sober. If you have consumed alcohol, the only way to truly sober up is time.
