A giant tornado raged near the Kirov region.
Specialists continue to assess the consequences of strong gusts and tornadoes in the eastern part of the European part of Russia that occurred on May 28. New satellite images (partially covered by clouds) have revealed a massive windfall in the Komi Republic, 10 km southeast of the village of Pervomaisky and the meteorological station of Pustosh.
The windfall was caused by a powerful tornado and the accompanying gusts. The total area of the windfall is 2060 hectares, of which over 1700 hectares are directly from the tornado. The path length of the tornado is 41 km, with a maximum width of over 1500 m. This is one of the largest windfalls from tornadoes in the European part of Russia in the history of satellite observations. In terms of width, it even exceeds the windfall from the Ivanovo tornado on June 9, 1984.
The characteristic shape of the windfall with bends, which are never typical for windfalls from gusts, indicates that it was indeed caused by a tornado. However, some signs, particularly the preserved young forest growth, suggest that this tornado may have been weaker than the previous one, which occurred 80 km southeast, near the border with the Kirov region.
The outbreak of dangerous weather phenomena on May 28 can already be recognized as one of the largest in the European part of Russia in the 21st century. Fortunately, the damage turned out to be relatively small (besides the windfalls, the total area of which already exceeds 7 thousand hectares), as the gusts and tornadoes passed over sparsely populated areas, writes the public page "Dangerous Natural Phenomena of the Perm Region."
