Kirov Oblast has entered the top of the most forested regions in Russia.
According to the state forest registry as of January 1, 2026, the forest cover of the country is 46.2%. The area of forested land in the forest fund is 795 million hectares. The most forested regions recognized at the end of last year are Irkutsk Oblast (82.2%), Primorsky Krai (78%), the Republic of Komi (72.7%), Zabaykalsky Krai (68.7%), Vologda Oblast (68.4%), Sverdlovsk Oblast (68.3%), and Sakhalin Oblast (68.1%), Khabarovsk Krai (66.7%), Amur Oblast (65.1%), and Novgorod Oblast (64.7%), the Republic of Buryatia (63.9%), as well as Kirov Oblast with an indicator of 62.8%. In 19 regions of the country, an increase in forest cover has been noted. On average, the indicator increased by 0.1%. In the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, forest cover increased by 0.7% — a significant improvement for both the region itself and the Southern Federal District. The level of forest cover, the agency explained, is influenced by areas of reforestation and afforestation, forest fires, outbreaks of harmful organisms, and forest diseases.
