The Ministry of Internal Affairs explained how hackers hack routers.
According to the Cybercrime Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, users often leave factory settings unchanged. Most often, this concerns routers, IP cameras, smart devices, and administrative panels of services. This was reported by "Izvestia."
According to the agency, criminals actively use automated programs that mass-check devices for standard logins and passwords. Such attacks do not require complex skills — bots simply go through the most popular combinations, among which admin remains one of the most common.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs noted that many users consider home devices "uninteresting" for hackers and do not change preset passwords. However, such gadgets often become part of botnets — networks of infected devices that are then used for attacks, surveillance, and spreading malware.
Experts recommend changing standard passwords to complex and unique ones, disabling remote access when not needed, and regularly updating device firmware.
