Heat, traffic jams, and air conditioning: an expert explained how to avoid engine overheating.
According to the expert, the first thing that needs to be checked regularly is the level of antifreeze. It is recommended to do this at least once a week and definitely before long trips. The antifreeze should be between the minimum and maximum level marks in the expansion tank. It should only be checked when the engine is cold. Under no circumstances should the cap be unscrewed on a hot engine — the system is under pressure, and this can lead to the release of boiling liquid, explains Ershov.
The expert noted that not only a low level of coolant is dangerous, but also old antifreeze. Over time, it loses its properties and is less effective at dissipating heat, which directly affects the risk of engine overheating. On average, it is recommended to change the antifreeze every 2–3 years or every 60–80 thousand kilometers of mileage.
Another cause of problems can be a dirty radiator. In summer, it quickly gets clogged with fluff, insects, sand, and road dirt, which worsens engine cooling. The problem is especially acute in traffic jams when the car lacks the oncoming airflow. Therefore, it is important to clean radiators in a timely manner at a professional service.
In addition, in hot weather, the load on the cooling system increases due to the operation of the air conditioner. "The air conditioning compressor takes away some of the engine's power. In extreme heat and especially in traffic jams, this can become an additional load. If the engine temperature starts to rise, it is better to turn off the air conditioner immediately," noted the specialist.
It is equally important to monitor the operation of the cooling fan. It helps cool the radiator at low speeds or while parked. You can check its operation yourself: after warming up the engine, the fan should turn on automatically.
The expert also explained what to do if the engine has already started to overheat. First of all, you need to stop, but do not turn off the engine immediately. After that, it is recommended to turn the heater to maximum, open the hood, and let the engine idle for a few minutes.
If the temperature continues to rise or steam appears from under the hood, the engine must be turned off and a tow truck called. The main thing is not to try to open the radiator cap or expansion tank on a hot engine. This is dangerous.
The specialist added that timely diagnosis of the cooling system is significantly cheaper than a major engine repair. Therefore, before the summer season, drivers should check the condition of the antifreeze, radiators, hoses, thermostat, pump, and cooling fan.
