Lice oppressed the house mouse.
In Kirov, the owners of a pet mouse contacted a veterinary clinic with complaints about the deterioration of their pet's condition. The animal became lethargic, exhibited unusual breathing, and a small injury was noticed on its back. During the examination and microscopic analysis of the fur, the veterinarian discovered external parasites in the rodent — lice of the species Polyplax serrata. Such cases in pet rodents are not uncommon. The specialist explained that lice are transmitted through direct contact with an infected animal or through grooming items — cages, bedding, and accessories. The insects are visible to the naked eye, and their eggs (nits) attach to the fur. It is noted that such parasites are species-specific and are not dangerous to humans and other animal species. However, lice feed on blood, which can lead to itching, scratching, fur loss, and even anemia in the pet. Veterinarians emphasize that at the first signs of deterioration, it is important to seek help immediately.
