"Dangerous Ice": Kirov Residents Warned About Threats on Water Bodies
The melting process occurs fastest along the shores: spring ice covered with snow turns into a loose mass, the city administration reported. Every year, thin ice causes accidents. Most often, children and fishermen end up in the water. To avoid tragedy, rescuers remind of simple rules: do not go out on thin ice; do not test the strength of the ice by kicking it; do not gather in groups on separate sections of ice; do not approach holes, cracks, or openings; do not cross water bodies on ice in prohibited areas; do not go out on the ice in the dark or in poor visibility. Ice is considered safe for humans if it is at least 10 cm thick in fresh water. If temperatures above zero persist for more than three days, the strength of the ice decreases by 25%. Specialists from territorial administrations install warning signs near water bodies. Parents are asked to have conversations with their children: water bodies are not a place for games.
