The Interior Ministry warned about New Year's digital greeting cards: they may contain a virus.
The agency said that e‑cards and links arriving in messaging apps and via SMS before the holidays may contain malicious code. It is enough to simply open the file or click the link for the device to become infected. This was stated in a message from the department for combating the unlawful use of ICT, Izvestia reports.
Police note that other schemes also intensify before the New Year: messages about “attractive discounted gifts,” fake promotions and offers for teenagers to earn money during the holiday break. In all cases the recipient may be tricked into revealing bank card details or having a virus installed.
The Interior Ministry reminded that you must never reply to such messages or share any personal data. According to the agency, more than 8,000 cybercrimes were recorded during the previous New Year holidays, many of which could have been avoided with more careful attention to suspicious messages.
