Kurdyumov operated on a girl with a severe form of scoliosis.

A 14-year-old girl recently came to the Kirov Center for Traumatology with an extremely severe form of thoracolumbar scoliosis. Her spine resembled the letter S. This threatened irreversible damage to her respiratory and cardiac systems.

The highly complex surgery to correct the spinal deformity was performed by orthopedic trauma surgeon and first deputy chairman of the government Dmitry Kurdyumov. Also on the operating team were the chief physician of the Trauma Center Mikhail Yagovkin, head of the pediatric trauma and orthopedic department Alexey Molchanov, anesthesiologist-resuscitator Pavel Prozorov, and nurse Darya Komarova. The operation lasted four hours.

The doctors implanted a multi-anchored screw-rod system. Transpedicular screws were sequentially inserted into the girl’s vertebrae, and titanium rods were placed on the concave and convex sides of the deformity.

Kurdyumov noted that they managed to straighten the spine and preserve its function. Now the girl will be able to lead a full life.
