Swans with "angel wings" were found in Urzhumsky District.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Kirov Region received a report about a group of swans spotted on one of the ponds in Urzhumsky District. After an inspection, specialists determined that two birds have a developmental defect — the so‑called “angel wing,” which prevents the swans from flying and surviving normally in the wild.
Ministry staff have already contacted the rehabilitation center “Bolshoye Gnezdo.” The birds are to be taken from the wild and sent for treatment and rehabilitation. After recovery, their future place of residence will be determined.
Ecologists emphasize, however, that the presence of swans on freezing bodies of water is not in itself a reason to panic. Healthy birds remain on the water until it freezes over completely — cold water and frosts do not bother them. Dense plumage and fat reserves help retain heat, and the limited number of blood vessels in their legs reduces heat loss.
The ministry also reminded people that catching wild swans or introducing them to domestic poultry is prohibited — it is dangerous both for people and for the birds themselves. Swans fly away on their own when they are ready. If, however, a bird is injured or trapped in the ice, residents are asked to report it immediately to the ministry or the “Bolshoye Gnezdo” rehabilitation center.
