"Car-fall" on Popova: experts explained what's wrong with the pothole on the road

According to the company, at 16 Popov Street the technical connection of the cold water supply to a new apartment building is being completed. The work is being carried out directly on the roadway — in a deep excavation fenced off with reinforced-concrete blocks weighing three tons, with lighting and warning signs. However, the digging proved to be significantly more complicated than expected.

Specialists encountered dense rocky soil, reinforced-concrete slabs of unknown origin at the bottom of the trench, and a large number of underground utilities — some of which, it turned out, are not located where indicated on the official diagrams. Because of this, the project had to be revised and restarted, and additional heavy equipment was called to the site.

Despite all safety measures, over the weekend motorists kept crashing into the barrier and ending up in the trench. In one case a car rammed a concrete block so hard that it damaged a water pipe, causing the site to flood. Of the three drivers involved in the accidents, only one reported the incident to the traffic police (GIBDD); the others left without contacting the officers.

On the morning of November 16 specialists promptly pumped out the water, repaired the damage and restored the cold water supply. They plan to finish the work and landscape the area by November 23.
