In Russia, the sale of tobacco may be completely banned.
According to Sergei Leonov, head of the State Duma’s Health Protection Committee, such an initiative is possible only with broad public support.
“For that, there needs to be a public demand and agreement reached on such a decision,” Leonov said.
He recalled that a ban on the sale of tobacco is already in effect in the Maldives, and similar measures have been considered previously in other countries. In particular, in New Zealand in 2022 it was proposed to introduce a lifetime ban on the sale of cigarettes to people born after January 1, 2009, but that bill was later withdrawn, Lenta.ru added.
The deputy emphasized that Russia is closely watching international experience and may consider similar restrictions in the future if society is ready for such changes.
