Canine experts explained how to take a dog to crowded events.

Modern festivals, markets and even concerts are becoming increasingly dog-friendly. Pet owners readily take their dogs with them—to picnics, outdoor movies or exhibitions. But not everyone considers that a noisy crowd, loud music and heat can cause real stress for an animal. The Russian Cynological Federation reminded people that even if a venue allows dogs, responsibility still rests with the owner.

RKF President Vladimir Golubev notes that organizers are obliged to provide basic conditions for pet owners and their four-legged friends, but the main responsibility lies with the pets’ owners. No volunteer can fix the situation if a dog already has socialization problems or health issues.

Socialization — the basis of calm

If a pet gets nervous at the sight of other people or dogs, it’s better to postpone going out. Socialization is the animal’s ability to react calmly to stimuli. It should be taught from an early age. Without it, even a walk along a busy street can end in stress, let alone noisy festivals.

      Health check — mandatory

Before heading out, it’s worth visiting the veterinarian. Any event is a strain and full of emotions, and the journey itself can be tiring. It’s also important to ensure that the pet does not pose a danger to others — in terms of health and vaccinations.

      Create a safe space

Even if organizers promise a “dog zone,” it’s better to rely on yourself. Bring an umbrella or canopy, a mat, water and a favorite toy. If the event lasts several hours, towels with a familiar home scent will come in handy. For off-site festivals with an overnight stay you can bring a carrier or a small tent.

Water and coolness — always at hand

Fresh water should always be available to the pet. Bring your own bowl and a supply; don’t rely on public fountains. In hot weather a cooling mat will help; in cooler weather, a blanket. Never leave a dog in a car, even “just for a minute.”

      Clean up after yourself

Even if the event provides bins and bags, don’t forget to bring your own. Cleanliness is respect for others. Fines for violating rules on walking pets in public places are still enforced.
