According to the agency, most winter windshield washer fluids are made from alcohol–water solutions with added detergents, fragrances and dyes. Modern "washer fluids" use isopropyl alcohol, propylene glycol and ethylene glycol. "Isopropyl alcohol is permitted for use in the production of windshield washer fluids. It has an unpleasant, sharp odor reminiscent of acetone, but this alcohol is not toxic to humans. Please note that alcohol-based windshield washer fluids contain non-food-grade alcohols and are unsuitable for food purposes," the regional office of Rospotrebnadzor noted.
The agency reported that illegal manufacturers use methyl alcohol (methanol) in windshield cleaners, which is the most dangerous toxic substance and, if used in the home, can have a negative impact on human health, including causing death. "Methanol is a strong cumulative poison that has a targeted effect on the nervous and vascular systems, the optic nerves and the retina. It can cause acute poisoning with a fatal outcome when inhaled, absorbed through intact skin, or ingested. It strongly irritates the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract and the eyes. The lethal dose of methanol when taken orally is 30 grams, but severe poisoning accompanied by blindness can be caused by 5–10 grams of this substance," Rospotrebnadzor for the Kirov Region noted.
When buying windshield washer fluid, pay attention to the labeling. It should contain information on the product name, the manufacturer's name, the manufacturer's address, instructions for use, composition, precautions, shelf life, the document on the basis of which the washer fluid was manufactured, volume, the certificate of state registration of the product, and the intended purposes.
To protect yourself from possibly buying low-quality "non-freezing" fluid, the agency advises purchasing windshield washer fluid in large chain or specialized stores, not at roadside stalls. It is also necessary to keep the receipt for the product and the used container (label) to present them, if necessary, when filing a complaint with the seller (manufacturer) about poor-quality non-freezing fluid.
