These compounds are based on rare-earth metals. They not only kill cancer cells but also glow — thanks to this, doctors will be able to track how the drug penetrates tissues and exactly where it is working, RIA Novosti reports, citing the Ministry of Education and Science.

According to the researchers, the new substances showed high activity against several types of cancer — ovarian, breast, intestinal and lung.

“We were able to select a combination of elements that enhances the therapeutic and luminescent properties of the compounds,” said Candidate of Chemical Sciences Marina Uvarova of the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Scientists believe their discovery will help in the future to develop more precise and safer cancer drugs, and to use such compounds for diagnostics and monitoring of cells.
