50,000 Kirov residents were vaccinated against encephalitis.
The Rospotrebnadzor administration for Kirov Oblast reminded residents of the region that the territory of the oblast is endemic for tick-borne infections. Pathogens of tick-borne encephalitis, borreliosis, human granulocytic anaplasmosis and human monocytic ehrlichiosis continue to circulate in the region.
The first case of a tick bite this year was recorded on March 26 in the Omutninsky District. The peak of tick activity occurred in May–July, and the largest number of medical visits was registered in the 21st week.
Tick-borne encephalitis was detected in residents of several municipal districts and the city of Kirov. According to Rospotrebnadzor, 97.7% of those who fell ill had not been vaccinated. Vaccinated individuals mostly experienced the disease in a mild form and without complications. Adults made up 85% of those affected, with more than half being people over 50 years old. By social status, the majority of those who fell ill were pensioners and the unemployed.
Most infections occurred outdoors (35.5%) and on dacha or home plots (42.7%). Laboratory studies showed that the borreliosis pathogen was found in 51.3% of the ticks examined, the encephalitis virus in 1.28%, and the pathogens of ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis in 8.7% and 0.5% of cases, respectively.
Rospotrebnadzor advises residents of Kirov Oblast to get vaccinated against tick-borne encephalitis. In the first nine months of 2025, more than 50,000 people received vaccinations and revaccinations, including about 24,000 children. Vaccination is funded by the regional budget, by employers for groups at occupational risk, and by individuals themselves.
Vaccinations can be given according to the standard or accelerated schedule. Under the standard schedule, the first two doses are administered at intervals of one to seven months, the third after 5–12 months. The full course provides protection for three years. Under the accelerated schedule, the interval between the first two vaccinations is reduced to 2–4 weeks, and it is safe to visit the forest no earlier than two weeks after the second dose.
