Two men were convicted in the Kirov Region for a murder and an attempted murder that took place 26 years ago.

The investigation and the court established that on the night of June 26, 1998, men broke into a house in Omutninsk where a 23-year-old woman, her two-year-old son and her 48-year-old mother-in-law were present. The attackers, acting in concert, beat the women with sticks while demanding money and threatened the child. The elderly woman died at the scene from the injuries sustained; her daughter-in-law lost consciousness.

The perpetrators' loot amounted to just over 6,000 rubles — about one-tenth of the sum the family had obtained from the sale of an apartment.

For a long time the crimes remained unsolved: the accused intimidated witnesses. However, in 2024 eyewitnesses testified, and the surviving victim confidently identified the attackers.

The court imposed sentences of 18 years and 19 years and 1 month of imprisonment to be served in a strict-regime penal colony. The victim's claim was also upheld: the convicted were ordered to jointly pay 2.5 million rubles in compensation for non-pecuniary damage.

The verdict has not yet entered into force.
