In Russia, it was proposed to ban the sale of contraceptives to married couples.

The appeal states that the availability of contraceptives allegedly leads to a decline in birth rates and a deepening demographic crisis. The authors of the initiative believe that restricting access to contraceptives will raise the average number of children in Russian families from 1.5 to 2.5–3, Gazeta.ru reports.

According to representatives of Sorok Sorokov, introducing restrictions will stabilize the population size, create a young workforce and reduce the burden on the pension system. In addition, they say, this should increase the country's economic potential.

The activists claim that without "decisive measures" Russia could face a shortfall of about 10 million working-age citizens by 2050.
